FAQ

The terms are used interchangeably in horticulture, but both trace their design logic back to industrial temperature and process control, a field where sensor-based switching has been used for decades in manufacturing and HVAC environments. In a grow room, both devices monitor air temperature with a probe and use a relay (an electrically operated switch) to turn on and off the connected heating or cooling equipment whenever the reading crosses a user-defined setpoint. Grow room controllers often build on this foundation by adding features like day/night differential setpoints, high-temperature shutoff, or integration with broader climate automation systems.

Plants generally benefit from temperatures that are 4 to 8 degrees Celsius cooler during the dark period. A day/night controller automates this shift by switching between day and night modes in direct response to your lighting cycle, eliminating the need to manually adjust setpoints between periods. The Grozone TP1 handles this with two fixed setpoints, while the programmable TP12 goes further by letting you dial in a custom differential of 4°F to 20°F (2°C to 11°C) to match the specific requirements of your crop.

Yes, but compatibility depends on the AC unit. Standard window or portable air conditioners with manual controls can be plugged directly into the relay output of most temperature controllers; the controller simply interrupts power to the unit when the setpoint is satisfied. Mini-split systems work differently: they do not accept a direct switched connection, so they typically require a low-voltage contact module or a compatible device station such as the Trolmaster ARS-1 or ARS-2 to bridge the signal.

The range covers both 120V and 240V applications. The Trolmaster DST-1 and DST-2 share the same input voltage range of 100–240 VAC, 50/60 Hz, with a 10A output current rating in both cases; the difference lies in the plug type and the circuit each is designed for. Grozone TP controllers operate at 120V with a maximum resistive load of 15A. Always review the full specification for each unit, including load ratings, before connecting heating or cooling equipment.

Yes. The Trolmaster DST-1, DST-2, TSH-1, ARS-1, ARS-2, and TS-3 are all Hydro-X compatible device stations. They connect to the Hydro-X controller via the proprietary bus system, bringing temperature control into a single panel where it can be coordinated alongside lighting, CO₂, humidity, and all other grow room parameters from one unified interface.
